"Kickstarter is an unusually demanding environment for video because viewers need to understand a product quickly while also connecting with the people and story behind it."
When Coconut Furniture was preparing to launch its Kickstarter campaign for the Coco Slim, the video needed to do more than simply show a beautiful piece of furniture. It needed to explain the product, demonstrate how it worked and, most importantly, make potential backers want to own it. Kickstarter is an unusually demanding environment for video because viewers need to understand a product quickly while also connecting with the people and story behind it. For this project, Truth & Beauty Video Production approached the production as a combination of product cinematography, storytelling and performance-driven content designed specifically for a crowdfunding launch.

Creating a Camera That Could Hover Over the Product
One of the goals for the shoot was to find camera angles that would make the Coco Slim feel dynamic and visually distinctive. Rather than relying exclusively on traditional tripod, handheld or gimbal shots, we built a specialized setup where the camera and gimbal were mounted to a pole. The operator could then hold the entire system above the furniture while walking, creating the appearance of a camera floating directly over the table as it moved through the space.

The resulting footage gave the product a sense of movement and scale that would have been difficult to achieve with a conventional camera setup. It allowed us to smoothly reveal the table from above while following the action around it, making the furniture feel almost like a character within the scene. Specialty shots like this are particularly useful for product videos because they give the editor visually interesting moments that can demonstrate a product while simultaneously holding the viewer’s attention. Instead of simply showing the Coco Slim from another angle, the camera movement became part of the experience of discovering the product.
Using Lighting to Make the Furniture Look Beautiful
Product cinematography requires a careful balance between making the environment look beautiful and ensuring that the product remains the visual priority. For this shoot, we used as many as 10 lights to shape the environment, illuminate the talent and create different looks throughout the production. One example involved using a junior boom to position a light directly over the table, producing a beautiful warm source that fell evenly across the cast while also creating an inviting atmosphere around the product.

We also used mirrors as part of the lighting design to create a completely different visual effect. By reflecting and breaking up the light across the walls, we were able to create a beautiful dappled pattern that added character and realism to the environment without competing with the furniture. This kind of controlled imperfection can make a carefully designed commercial environment feel much more natural and lived-in. The result was lighting that felt cinematic and sophisticated while still keeping the Coco Slim at the centre of the frame.
Making the Interviews Personal
For a Kickstarter campaign, the people behind a product matter almost as much as the product itself. Potential backers are not simply purchasing something from a large anonymous corporation; they are being asked to believe in an idea and support the people bringing it to life. Because of that, we chose to film the interviews with the talent looking directly into the camera rather than using a traditional off-camera interview setup.

Direct-to-camera interviews create a much more immediate relationship between the person speaking and the viewer. Instead of feeling like someone is being interviewed by a filmmaker, it feels as though the founder or product creator is speaking directly to the potential customer. For a crowdfunding campaign, that personal connection can be particularly powerful because authenticity and trust are central to convincing someone to become an early supporter.
Shooting for Both Widescreen and Vertical
The Kickstarter campaign was the primary destination for the video, but the content also had to work beyond the campaign page. Social media platforms increasingly prioritize vertical video, while websites, Kickstarter pages and many other digital platforms still rely heavily on widescreen content. Rather than treating vertical content as an afterthought, we planned the production so that footage could be used effectively in both formats.

This meant considering framing, camera movement and subject positioning during production rather than trying to crop everything afterward. By capturing footage with multiple aspect ratios in mind, Coconut Furniture could get considerably more usable content from the same production day. The resulting footage could support the main Kickstarter video while also providing material for social media, advertising, product promotion and future marketing. For a product launch, that kind of content versatility can significantly increase the return on the original video production investment.
The Results: A Kickstarter Campaign That Far Exceeded Its Goal
The finished video became part of a highly successful Kickstarter campaign for Coco Slim, Coconut Furniture’s transforming dining table designed for modern living and smaller spaces. The campaign set a funding goal of $35,000 and ultimately raised $386,742—more than 11 times its original target, or 1,105% funded. The campaign attracted 154 backers, with an average pledge of approximately $2,511, and ran from June 9 to July 9, 2026.

Those numbers demonstrate just how effectively the campaign converted attention into financial support. Raising more than $350,000 above the original funding target is a significant result for a product launch, particularly for a product where potential customers need to understand both its design and its functionality. The video was only one component of the campaign’s success, and no single production can claim responsibility for Kickstarter performance on its own. However, the role of video was to communicate the product clearly, create desire, establish trust and give potential backers a compelling reason to keep watching.
Why Product Video Matters for a Crowdfunding Campaign
A Kickstarter video has a unique job. It needs to introduce a product, demonstrate how it works, communicate its benefits, establish credibility and create an emotional connection—all within a relatively short amount of time. That requires more than simply pointing a camera at the product and recording someone explaining it. The production has to think carefully about cinematography, lighting, interviews, demonstrations, editing, pacing and how every shot contributes to the overall sales story.
The Coconut Furniture project is a good example of how those elements can work together. The overhead gimbal shots made the product visually interesting, the lighting gave the furniture and environment a premium feel, the direct-to-camera interviews created a personal connection and the multi-format approach extended the value of the footage beyond the Kickstarter page. Most importantly, all of those creative decisions were made in service of communicating the product and its story rather than simply making something that looked impressive.
Turning a Product Into a Story
Ultimately, successful product video is about more than making an object look good. It is about helping the viewer understand why the product exists, what problem it solves and why they should care about it. For Coconut Furniture, that meant showing the Coco Slim not simply as a dining table, but as an innovative solution for modern spaces and a product worth getting behind.
That is the approach we take at Truth & Beauty Video Production. We combine cinematic production techniques with practical marketing thinking to create videos that are designed not only to look great, but to help businesses launch products, explain ideas and connect with customers. For brands preparing a Kickstarter campaign, product launch or major marketing push, the right video can become one of the most valuable pieces of content in the entire campaign.
